Surprise Proposals, do's and don'ts! - Written by Ariel Hawkins Photography - Buffalo Wedding Photographer

đź’Ť Surprise Proposals, do's and don'ts!

Do's:

Do consider your partner's personality: Make sure the proposal aligns with their comfort level. If they’re more private, opt for an intimate setting rather than a public spectacle.

Do plan ahead: Coordinate with your photographer and, if needed, other vendors (like florists or musicians). Ensure everything is in place, from timing to location, for a seamless experience.

Do practice what you'll say: While the moment will be emotional, having a rough idea of your words can help you stay focused and heartfelt when the nerves kick in.

Do keep the moment personal: Add special touches that reflect your relationship—like a favorite song playing in the background or proposing at a meaningful location.

Do communicate with the photographer: Let them know exactly when and where you plan to pop the question so they’re ready to capture the moment discreetly and from the best angle.

Do keep an eye on timing: Proposing during golden hour (just before sunset) can add a magical glow to your photos. Be mindful of lighting and surroundings.

Do make sure the ring is secure: Double-check that the engagement ring is safe and discreetly stored. You don’t want any last-minute fumbling or misplaced items.

Do have a plan for afterward: Whether it’s celebrating with family or having a private moment, plan a way to enjoy the time immediately after the proposal and capture more candid shots.

Don'ts:

Don’t put your partner on the spot in a way they’d hate: If they wouldn’t enjoy being the center of attention in front of a big crowd, avoid public places with lots of people.

Don’t forget about the surroundings: Make sure the setting isn’t too loud, crowded, or distracting, which could ruin the moment or cause your partner to miss what’s happening.

Don’t overcomplicate it: Keep the proposal simple and heartfelt. Elaborate setups can sometimes backfire or feel staged. Focus on what makes your relationship special.

Don’t ignore the weather: If you’re planning an outdoor proposal, have a backup plan in case of rain or harsh weather. Check the forecast ahead of time to avoid surprises.

Don’t forget to rehearse with the photographer: A quick run-through ensures everyone is in position and ready for the big moment. It reduces stress and helps capture the perfect shots.

Don’t involve too many people unless necessary: While including family or friends can be meaningful, too many people can overwhelm the moment. Keep the focus on you and your partner

Don’t rush the moment: Let it unfold naturally. Take your time to express your feelings before asking the big question, and give your partner time to process everything before the celebration begins.

Don’t take it too hard if things don’t go exactly as planned: Unexpected things can happen during a proposal. Focus on the love and excitement, not the small details that may go off-script.

These do's and don'ts will help you create a thoughtful and meaningful surprise proposal that feels genuine and unforgettable!
